Yeast Infection Treatments – Off Brands And Effectiveness

Yeast infections are very common, as are the treatments. There are many over the counter treatments that are very common. There are also off brand treatments and other treatments.

There are many over the counter treatments for yeast infections. The over the counter ingredients have one of four active ingredients: butoconazole nitrate (Femstat 3), clotrimazole (Gyne-Lotrimin and others), miconazole (Monistat 7 and others), and tioconazole (Vagistat).

If you use an off brand, it is important and easy just to ensure one of the ingredients are included.

The above drugs are in the same anti-fungal family and work in similar ways to break down the cell wall of the yeast organism until it dissolves.

When you visit the doctor the first time you have a yeast infection, you can ask which product may be best for you and discuss the advantages of the different forms the products come in: vaginal suppositories (inserts) and creams with special applicators. Remember to read the warnings on the product's labeling carefully and follow the directions.

Symptoms usually improve within a few days, but it's important to continue using the medication for the number of days directed, even if you no longer have symptoms.

There are some popular off brands that can be used for treatment. For example, Hydrogen Peroxide is produced naturally by bacteria in your vagina and kills yeast. If you wish to increase Hydrogen Peroxide: mix 1 teaspoon of ordinary 3% hydrogen peroxide from your market or pharmacy with 1 cup of water and use as a douche once a day until after symptoms cease.

Pau D'Arco is another common remedy. It is a rainforest remedy made from the inner bark of the large native South American tree. Indigenous South American tribes have traditionally drunk tea made from the shredded inner bark to boost their immunity. Modern scientific evidence shows that extracts of Pau D'Arco can protect against a wide range of bacterial and fungal organisms, including Candida albicans. The herb is also useful for treating athlete's foot and fungal nail infections. Pau D'Arco is not recommended during pregnancy. The treatment includes:

•    For adults: take two capsules with a meal three times daily.
•    Five capsules are equivalent to two cups of Taheebo tea.
•    For children age 6-12 years: take one capsule with a meal twice daily.

One another method that is natural and an off brand is Potassium Sorbate, which is a potent fungicide usually used in preserving foods and brewing beer to stop the growth of the yeast at the correct time. To use this:

•    Make a 3% solution by adding 8 gm (about 1 tablespoon) potassium sorbate to a cup of water.
•    Dip a cotton tampon in the solution, inserting it at bedtime and removing it in the morning.
•    Continue treatment for a few days until after the symptoms.
