Treatment Of A Vaginal Yeast Infection With Miconazole Nitrate
Yeast infections are no fun and can be uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing. It’s important to seek treatment if you think you have a yeast infection and make sure you understand which type of infection you have so that it can be properly treated.
Miconazole is typically applied topically to the skin or mucus membranes in order to treat a vaginal yeast infection. It is an imidazole anti-fungal agent and works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, which is one of the main components of fungal cell membranes.
In addition to possessing anti-fungal properties, Miconazole can also be used to fight certain types of parasites and is used as a rinse additive in photo developing
It can be used to treat jock itch, athlete’s foot and ringworm. Internally, it can be used to treat oral or vaginal thrush, which is a yeast infection. Infants typically suffer from oral thrush (painless white patches inside of the mouth and lips).
Miconazole can be absorbed into the intestinal track with both oral and topical use and may cause drug interactions. Miconazole can interact with the following:
- anticoagulants
- phenytoin
- Terbinafine
- atypical antipsychotics
- cyclosporine
- some statins used to treat hypercholesterolemia
Miconazole is available in creams, lotions, powders, spray liquids and spray powders. It’s available under brand names Micatin, Monistat-3, Monistat-7, Monistat-Derm and Monistat-Dual-Pack.
It is applied once or twice a day for up to two weeks for various types of skin infections. When it’s used to treat athlete’s foot, it’s applied once or twice a day for 1 month. For vaginal yeast infections, it is usually used once a day before bedtime and is used for three to seven days, depending on which product the individual purchases.
When using this product, it is important that individuals follow instructions carefully and not use more or less of the product than instructed to use. If a patient has questions or concerns regarding Miconazole, he or she can speak to their doctor or a pharmacist regarding them questions.
It is also very important that women who are using it as a treatment for a vaginal yeast infection complete the entire kit that they not discontinue use too soon because symptoms have decreased or ceased.
Women should use Miconazole just before bed. Make sure you are ready to lie down immediately after applying the cream. Fill the special applicator that comes with the product with the cream to the level indicated (or the suppository that came with it). Lie on your back with your knees drawn upward towards your chest and spread apart. Gently insert the applicator into the vagina and push the plunger in order to release the medication. Withdraw the applicator and discard. If the applicator is reusable, make sure you are pulling it apart and washing it thoroughly right away.
Wash your hands thoroughly in order to avoid spreading the infection and lay down immediately.
