Treatment Of A Vaginal Yeast Infection With Fluconazole

Fluconazole is used to treat fungal infections of the vagina, mouth, throat, esophagus, abdomen, lungs, blood and other organs in the human body.

Fluconazole is also sometimes used to treat an infection of the membranes covering the brain and spine, referred to as meningitis.  These types of infections are caused by fungus.

In patients who suffer from recurring yeast infections, Fluconazole is used to prevent yeast infection outbreaks from recurring

Fluconazole is a class of antifungals called triazoles and works by slowing down the growth of fungi which cause the infection.  Available as a tablet or liquid, which is taken orally, it is usually taken once per day.  Fluconazole is typically taken for several weeks or sometimes even longer.  The length of treatment is dependent on the patient’s medical condition and how well they respond to its use.

Fluconazole should be taken exactly as recommended by a doctor or prescription directions.  Patients who discontinue use too soon will likely see the infection return, so it’s important to complete treatment fully. 

Sometimes used to treat fungal infections which start in the lungs and spread through the body, Fluconazole is also used to treat infections of the eye, prostate, skin and nails.  Individuals suffering from HIV, who have certain types of cancer or who have had organ transplants may be given Fluconazole in order to prevent infections.  This medication also has other uses.  To find out what this medication is used for, speak to your pharmacist or your doctor.

Before taking this medication, speak to your doctor if:

-      If you’ve had an allergic reaction to Fluconazole in the past or other similar medications, such as Sporanox, Nizoral or Vfend
-      If you are taking cisapride (Propulsid)
-      If you are taking other prescription and non-prescription medications, supplements or vitamins
-      If you have ever drunk large amounts of alcohol or have had cancer, acquired AIDS, an irregular heartbeat or suffer from heart, kidney or liver disease
-      If you are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant or are breastfeeding

You should be able to continue eating normally while taking this medication, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. 

Side effects may include:

-    headache
-    diarrhea
-    dizziness
-    stomach pain
-    heartburn
-    change in ability to taste food

If you suffer from the following more serious side effects, discontinue use and speak to your doctor immediately:

-    upset stomach
-    extreme tiredness
-    unusual bruising or bleeding
-    lack of energy
-    loss of appetite
-    pain in the upper right side of the stomach
-    yellowing of the skin or eyes
-    flu-like symptoms
-    dark urine
-    pale stools
-    seizures
-    rash
-    hives
-    itching
-    swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs
-    difficulty breathing or swallowing
