How Do You Know If Your Baby Has A Yeast Infection?

Babies can experience yeast infections in their mouths, which is referred to as thrush. For first time parents, thrush can be very scary! Often times, a baby’s diaper rash infection (a form of a yeast infection) is confused with regular diaper rash and nothing we do soothes the infant.

Yeast infections can be spread through delivery.  If a mother has a yeast infection, the infant can get the infection in his mouth as he’s being delivered.

A mother can also spread a yeast infection to her infant if she is infected and as is breastfeeding

Chinese Baby Lying in BedIt doesn’t matter if the child is male or female.  Yeast infections can attack either sex.  When a baby has thrush, he or she will have white patches in the mouth and on the tongue.  At first it may look like excess formula, but you will soon notice that it spreads.  These patches are painless, but will not go away unless treated properly.

Some babies do develop thrush even if yeast is not present.

If your child has a diaper rash which doesn’t go away within a day or two, he or she likely has a yeast infection.  It’s very easy for a baby to get a yeast infection because yeast thrives in warm and moist places, which means that a diapered butt is the perfect butt for infection.

A child may also develop a yeast infection if he or she is taking antibiotics.  The same thing can happen in adults.  Antibiotics tend to kill the healthy bacteria that our bodies need.

The yeast infection can spread through the baby’s digestive track, which means his mouth and the diapered area can become infected.  If your baby has diaper rash which has lots of bumps or bumps that are pus-filled or are showing a pattern, this is a yeast infection which may last several days and will not respond to topical treatment for diaper rash.

Just like with adults, this is a recurring problem with some children.  If you are concerned, make an appointment to have a doctor see the child immediately.

Make sure that you are allowing for air circulation when fastening on the diapers.  Obviously you don’t want fluids to be leaking out, but you need to make sure that the diapers are not too tight.

Some doctors may suggest you use an over-the-counter topical cream meant for fighting yeast infections in women on your baby if he has a yeast infection.  I would not advise using alternative methods of treatment on the child unless recommended by a doctor.  With small children, you have no way of knowing what they may be allergic to or how their bodies will react to things being put on their skin.
