How Do I Know If My Baby Has A Diaper Rash Yeast Infection?

If your baby has a diaper rash that does not respond to topical diaper rash treatments within two days, he or she likely has a diaper rash yeast infection.

Often times, parents don’t understand that their child may be suffering from something more than a regular diaper rash and it isn’t until the child’s butt is bleeding and painfully red that the parents think to go to the doctor.

It’s important to make sure you’re not putting the diaper on your baby too tight. Some of the same rules apply to your baby as do you when it comes to preventing yeast infections. Don’t dress your child in clothes which are particularly tight in the crotch.

Make sure you are changing your baby’s diaper regularly and allowing the genitals and butt to completely dry before putting the diaper on. You can help avoid yeast infections in your baby by sprinkling a little baby powder in the diaper each time you change his or her diaper.

If diaper rash does not go away within two days, your baby might have a yeast infection. Other signs to look for include a rash which appears as a flat reddened rash, which may resemble a lesion. The skin may be scaly with a very well defined red color. A yeast infection can appear within the folds of the groin area in children.

If you think your baby has a yeast infection, it’s important you get him or her into the doctor for treatment and to rule out other serious medical problems. Your doctor will likely prescribe a cream which he would prescribe for a woman with a vaginal yeast infection or you may be directed to use over-the-counter topical ointment.

Again, make sure you are changing your baby’s diapers at least every couple of hours. The child’s butt and genitals should be cleaned thoroughly and dried completely before the diaper is applied. Baby powder can be very helpful in helping to avoid yeast infections and diaper rash all together. My daughter is 18 months old and has never had diaper rash (I apply baby powder every time I change her diaper).

Make sure you are keeping your child clean and are using child safe soaps and bubble baths. Again, the child’s personal area should be completely dry before putting on a diaper and getting dressed.

If your child is still getting yeast infections, you may need to start giving your child some breathing time during the day. You can do this by laying a diaper underneath your child while he or she sleeps or using an absorbent pad (during sleep or on a playmat).
