Symptoms Of A Vaginal Yeast Infection: How Do You Know If You Have A Yeast Infection?

Vaginal yeast infections and bladder or kidney infections are often confused. I can’t tell you how many times I have gone into the doctor for having a bladder infection only to discover that what I had was a yeast infection instead.

What are the symptoms of a yeast infection?  The truth is, symptoms can vary from individual to individual and in severity.  It’s important to know what to look for and to find out exactly which type of infection you suffer from so that you can properly treat it.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of a vaginal infection, you may have one of many different types of vaginal infections, not necessarily a vaginal yeast infection

When we think of vaginal yeast infections, we think of foul-smelling odor and a white or grayish cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge.  Unfortunately, not all women experience these exact symptoms.  There are different levels of severity when it comes to vaginal yeast infections.  You may experience burning during urination, itching and redness without any discharge whatsoever. 

Or, you may have a vaginal discharge that is not a cottage cheese consistency or is more like green or yellow.  Some women experience a slight loss of bladder control during yeast infections.

You may not feel any irritation except occasionally irritation during urination or bathing and then experience a full blown outbreak of yeast infection symptoms after having sexual intercourse.

If you have a lot of vaginal itching, chances are you have some type of vaginal infection.  Sometimes an infection has to get extremely bad before you will experience any vaginal discharge or foul-smelling odor.  You can make a visit to your doctor for a urine test to see if you have a vaginal infection and what type of infection you have.  Now, many discount and drug stores sell over-the-counter urine test kits that will also be able to tell you which type of vaginal infection you have and whether or not you need to visit your doctor for a prescription medication.

Sometimes, vaginal itching is accompanied by a burning sensation or the vulva may be red or swollen.  Some types of infections tend to be more painful higher up, which is why they can be confused with a bladder infection. 

Some women identify a foul-smelling odor omitting from their vagina and they learn to associate this with a vaginal yeast infection.  This smell may be accompanied by discharge, but no pain, burning or irritation.  In women who experience fever or pelvic pain, seeing a doctor is a necessary in order to rule out more serious medical problems.
